Kyson’s Nautical Cake Smash

Kyson’s cake smash was such a fun session to photograph and a really lovely reminder that every baby does things in their own time.

We went with a nautical theme, using soft blues and neutral tones, with a matching cake to tie it all together. Everything worked really nicely colour-wise without feeling too busy, which kept the focus exactly where it should be — on Kyson.
As always, we started with some lovely portraits.

Taking Things at Kyson’s Pace

Like lots of little ones, Kyson was a bit unsure about his cake at first. New texture, new smell, lots going on… totally normal! He sat happily with it, had a little look, and took his time working out what this strange thing in front of him actually was.

With a bit of reassurance (and absolutely no pressure), he soon got more confident and started getting involved. This is why I always say there’s plenty of time during a cake smash session. There’s no rushing — we let babies settle, explore, and do things when they’re ready. That’s when you get the most natural expressions and moments.

Once He Got Going…

Once Kyson realised the cake wasn’t going anywhere, he really got into it. Little tastes, messy fingers, and some gorgeous thoughtful expressions along the way. These in-between moments are honestly my favourites — they show so much personality.

A Lovely Way to Celebrate a First Birthday

Cake smash sessions are such a fun way to celebrate a first birthday, especially when they’re kept relaxed and baby-led. As a vale of Glamorgan cake smash photographer, my aim is always to make sessions feel easy, unhurried, and enjoyable for everyone.

Kyson’s shoot was a great example of how giving babies time and space makes all the difference — and the photos speak for themselves.
