I hear it all the time:
“I’m thinking of starting a photography business because I love taking photos.”
And I get it. I really do. Photography is creative, exciting, and incredibly rewarding. There’s nothing quite like capturing a beautiful moment and knowing it will be treasured forever.
But here’s the honest truth…
If you start a photography business only because you love taking photos, you might be in for a bit of a shock.
Because taking photos is only about 25% of the job.
Yes — really.
When you run a photography business, you’re not just a photographer.
You’re also:
A marketer
A social media manager
A customer service team
An admin assistant
A product specialist
A cleaner
A bookkeeper
A tech support department
And a lifelong student
All rolled into one.
Most days, I actually spend far more time not taking photos than I do behind the camera.
Here’s what fills the rest of my time:
📱 Marketing & Social Media
Posting regularly, writing captions, replying to comments, planning content, staying visible — because if people don’t see you, they won’t book you.
💬 Responding to Enquiries
Emails, messages, phone calls, quotes, follow-ups… often in the evenings and weekends too.
🖥 Viewing Sessions & Sales
Helping families choose their images and products, guiding them through albums and wall art, making sure they love what they’re investing in.
📦 Ordering & Managing Products
Placing orders, checking quality, tracking deliveries, packaging, and making sure everything is perfect before it goes to clients.
📚 Training & Learning
Photography never stands still. There’s always something new to learn — lighting, editing, safety, business skills, posing, technology.
📷 Camera & Equipment Care
Cleaning sensors, checking lenses, updating software, backing up files, replacing worn gear. Your equipment is your livelihood.
🧹 Studio Cleaning & Tidying (If You Have One)
Floors, props, blankets, windows, toilets, toys, changing areas… keeping the space clean, safe, and welcoming takes real time and effort.
None of this shows up on Instagram.
But it’s what keeps the business running.
Don’t get me wrong — loving photography is important. You need that passion.
But to run a successful photography business, you also need to enjoy:
✔ Building relationships
✔ Running a business
✔ Being organised
✔ Solving problems
✔ Being consistent
✔ Showing up even when you’re tired
✔ Learning constantly
✔ Working when others are relaxing
Some days you won’t even pick up your camera.
And that can be disappointing if you thought you’d be shooting every day.
Even with all of this, I wouldn’t change it.
Because I don’t just love taking photos.
I love:
Watching families grow over the years
Seeing parents cry when they see their images
Building trust with my clients
Creating something meaningful
Running something that’s truly mine
Photography is the heart of my business.
But the business is what allows me to keep doing the photography.
If you’re thinking of starting a photography business, ask yourself this:
Do I love photography…
…or do I love building something from the ground up?
…or do I love working with people?
…or do I love learning and growing?
…or do I love creating an experience, not just images?
If the answer is yes — amazing. Go for it.
But if you only love taking photos, you might be happier keeping it as a passion rather than a business.
And that’s absolutely okay too.
Because running a photography business isn’t just about pictures.
It’s about commitment, care, consistency — and a whole lot of behind-the-scenes work that nobody ever sees.
And honestly?
That’s what makes it so special.
